The sleep patterns vary from baby to baby. Some babies sleep much more than others. However all babies like routines as this makes their day more predictable, hence comforting.

You may start introducing a bedtime routine when your baby is around 3 months old. This can help them adjust to the day-night cycles and provide them with cues on when it is time to hit the bed. At the same time, getting them into a simple, soothing bedtime routine can be a great opportunity for a 1-to-1 time with your baby.

While setting up a routine, choose activities that go can continue to do over a period of time and those that work the best as per your household routines. Just ensure that you repeat the activities everyday and in the same order. You could include simple activities like —

  1. Giving your baby a bath
  2. Giving the baby a relaxing massage
  3. Changing into night clothes and a fresh nappy
  4. Reading a bedtime story
  5. Dimming the lights in the room to create a calm atmosphere
  6. Singing a lullaby
  7. Brushing their teeth
  8. Giving a goodnight kiss and cuddle

Too much excitement and stimulation just before bedtime can wake your child up again. When you are closer to the bedtime, ensure that you start winding down. As your child gets older, it can be helpful to keep to a similar bedtime routine.
