After looking at the blood test results and the number of medicines that my father was taking, he always used to think about getting rid of diabetes but can’t as his doctor advised him to take medicines on time with a proper diet.

I believe that you might be having the same thoughts. “No sugar, no medicine, no stress” is all that we want… right? But did you know that your body fights with high blood sugar levels, 8–10 years before getting diagnosed with diabetes? Yes, it’s true.

With all the stress, improper sleep, irregular meal timings and physical inactivity throughout these years, we have slowly impacted our blood sugar levels. And now, after 8–10 years, the blood tests show “HbA1c: 9.6%” and we are worried about it.

Hey, it’s fine because you know what? Where there is a will, there is a way. You are “willing” to work on your health so that means our first mission is completed and I would like to congratulate you on that.

Talking about “way”, it surely means getting the best diabetes treatment and we have got you all covered so let’s jump on it step by step.

India is known as the diabetes capital of the world. It is a major health condition from which more than 80 million people in India are suffering. So, before going for any treatment, you must understand how diabetes is diagnosed.

How is diabetes diagnosed?

Diagnosis of diabetes is an easy process. Your examiner will use any one of these tests to examine your sugar levels:

Measuring sugar in the blood.
Measuring sugar in the blood.

Test 1: Fasting Blood Glucose Test

This is a blood test and as the name suggests, it requires fasting. This fast is precisely for 8 hours where you should not eat or drink anything except water.

  • If your fasting sugar comes between 100–125, you have a condition known as prediabetes which can be reversed.
  • If your fasting sugar comes above 125, you have diabetes.

Along with fasting blood sugar, your doctor may also ask you to get a postprandial blood sugar test done, where blood sugar levels will be measured 2 hours after you have eaten your food.

If both of these are high, you will be asked to get a standard diabetes blood test done known as HbA1c.

Test 2: HbA1c Test

HbA1c (glycosylated haemoglobin) is a blood test where average blood sugar levels within the last 3 months are measured. The results of HbA1c are deduced in percentage.

Test results showing 5.7–6.5% implies you are prediabetic and 6.5% or higher implies you have diabetes.

Test 3: Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT)

OGTT is mostly performed to diagnose the levels of blood sugar in pregnant women.

In OGTT, 75g of glucose dissolved in water is consumed and then blood sugar levels are checked. The examiner will test sugar levels every 30 minutes in 3 hours.

The high blood sugar level is confirmed if blood sugar levels are 200 mg/dl or higher at a 2-hour checkpoint.

Now that you know how diabetes is diagnosed, we have to work a way out to find the best treatment for diabetes in India. Give it a read to know-how.

What are the treatments for diabetes?

Diabetes is common but it is a serious disease. Once diagnosed through medical tests, do not take the diabetes treatment lightly or rather be careless about it.

You must know that the treatment of diabetes depends on the type of diabetes we have to work on, so here we go…

Treatment for Type 1 Diabetes

In Type 1 Diabetes, the cells producing insulin are destroyed which means that insulin from an external source is required. So, its treatment involves insulin injections, taken through the skin layer into the fatty tissue found under the skin.

Insulin cannot be taken through the mouth as it is damaged by the digestive juices present in the digestive system.

Various methods are available to take the insulin injection like syringes, insulin pens, jet injectors, and insulin pumps.

There are many types of insulin available that depend on how long it is going to act like short-acting, medium-acting, and long-acting. This is prescribed based on your blood sugar levels and other affecting factors.

Its treatment demands you to make and maintain a significant lifestyle change to aid your care better. It is suggested to:

  • Schedule frequent blood sugar tests (once in 3 months).
  • Monitor your blood sugar levels at home.
  • Take insulin as prescribed and adjust insulin units based on your blood sugar levels as advised by your doctor.
  • Insulin can cause you to wake up in the middle of the night due to low blood sugar levels so get timely Doctor consultations to avoid it.
  • Eat small meals every 2–3 hours. Include fruits and salads in mid meals.
  • Exercise every day. It can be as simple as a 15 minutes walk twice daily.

This way, they can lead a long active life.

Treatment for Type 2 Diabetes

In Type 2 Diabetes, insulin is produced by the pancreas which helps to transfer glucose from the blood to your cells but the issue is that your cells are resistant to insulin.

Insulin resistance means that your cells are unable to use insulin. So, transportation of glucose from the blood to cells doesn’t happen leading to increased blood glucose levels.

In order to manage high blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes, an intake of oral medicines or tablets is required. In the long term, with poor management of sugar, some patients are also suggested taking insulin.

It is also important for you to manage your body weight and follow these guidelines:

  • Take your medicines as prescribed and be regular with your Doctor follow-ups.
  • Get your blood sugars tested from the lab once in 3 months.
  • Have your meals on time. Avoid skipping or delaying meals.
  • Eat small meals every 2–3 hours. Include fruits, sprouts, raw paneer and salads in mid meals.
  • Move your body for at least 15–30 minutes per day. You can get involved in walking, yoga, aerobics or jogging etc.
  • Listen to meditations or practise breathing exercises to manage stress levels.
  • Have a proper sleep schedule of 7–8 hours every day.

What are you doing for your diabetes management?

After coming home late and tired from work, you just eat dinner and then go straight to sleep because it’s already too late.

The next day, you wake up early, get ready on time, may or may not skip breakfast and leave home for the office. Throughout the day, along with high stress, you’re busy going through files and fields that we tend to delay lunch.

In the evening, due to hunger pangs, you eat some fried and outside food. After a few hours, you run late to home, eat dinner late and then… you know, it’s the same cycle which repeats every day.

Due to your busy life, you forget to prioritise your health. You give 100% to your work so why not give at least 70% to your health?

Not eating or eating late is not the answer to controlling diabetes but eating proper meals at the proper time in the proper quantity helps to control your glucose levels in the body.

Walking and exercising daily is the simplest and most effective way to manage your diabetes. I would like to suggest you involve at least 30 minutes daily in any physical activity that you like at any time of the day.

The right diet, physical activity and timely medicines intake are the three main pillars to manage your sugar levels. Along with this, maintain adequate sleep quality and quantity with managed stress levels.

Reducing stress also improves sugar levels.

Consulting a doctor for diabetes treatment in India for the insulin and medication routine is a must. You have to take time out from your busy life to go to your scheduled Doctor appointment.

Before moving on, I would like to give you a few words of wisdom that can improve your treatment. And it is to prepare yourself for the Doctor’s consultation beforehand. Here’s how you do it…

How to get the most out of your doctor’s visit?

When the blood tests show a high glucose level, go visit a doctor, as he or she will provide you with the best treatment possible. Visiting a doctor can be more helpful if you go prepared this way:

  1. Keep a note of the symptoms: Like when you experience it the most, what increases or decreases it, what its frequency etc.
  2. Have a journal: In which you can record your blood sugar levels, insulin units, food intake and physical activity as it helps the doctor to analyse and prescribe better. He will help in busting food myths about the diabetic diet.
  3. Medications: Along with your diet, tell your doctor if you are on any medicines and what were your previous medicines.
  4. Other health conditions: Make a note of all the other known health issues and inform your doctor about them. High BP, high cholesterol levels, kidney disease, weight loss or weight gain etc should be mentioned.
  5. Family history: Tell your doctor if you have a family history of diabetes.
  6. Observe yourself: See how your appetite changes, mood swings, energy levels, sleep cycle, and body pain.

Permanent cure for diabetes in India

“Is diabetes curable?”

This is one of the most asked questions of all time. And I understand why it is so important for you to know the answer to it.

So, let me be honest and tell you that no, there is no cure for it. Diabetes, either Type 1 or Type 2 can neither be cured nor reversed.

But if proper diabetic care and management regime is followed, blood sugar levels can be controlled. Complications to other body organs like the heart, eyes, kidneys and the formation of ketone bodies that can arise out of high blood sugar levels can also be avoided by following the same diabetic treatment.
