Burping is as important for a baby as it is for any adult. As babies are not naturally adept at burping, you can assist them in burping. When a baby swallows milk or formula, air bubbles can become trapped in their tummy and cause pain or discomfort. That’s why it is necessary to help them burp.

What is the right time for your baby to burp?

There is no fixed time for this — it could be during the feed or after. Your baby might become uncomfortable during the feed which is an indication that they need a burping break. If not, you can help them burp after they’re done feeding.

But how to burp your baby?

There are a few ways to do this and we’ll discuss them all below. Don’t worry they’re super easy! The one thing to remember in all these ways is that their tummy and back are straight (not curled up).

  1. Over your shoulder-

Hug your baby close to your chest such that their head rests on your shoulder. Support the baby’s head and shoulder with one hand. Gently rub or pat their back to help them burp. It might help to walk around as you are doing this. You can also walk around while doing this.

2. Sitting in your lap-

Make your baby sit on your lap in such a way that they are facing away from you. Place your palm flat against their chest to support their chin and jaw. Make sure to not put any pressure on their throat area. Lean your baby slightly forwards and rub or pat their back with your other hand.

3. Lying over your lap-

Lie your baby on your lap such that they’re facing downwards. Support their chin without putting pressure on the throat area while rubbing or patting their back gently with the other hand.

As the baby grows up, they may not require assistance to burp. Sometimes they might burp on their own but it’s not necessary for them to burp always.
