Transitioning from milk to solids must be gradual only when the baby shows signs of being ready. This typically happens around 6 months of age for most babies.

When you introduce solids make sure to start with only 1 thing at a time. Continue feeding the baby regularly with it till they start enjoying and then introduce a new solid.

Start with single vegetables and fruits. Try mashed fruits such as banana or mango. You may try to introduce soft cooked or steamed broccoli, potato, yam, sweet potato, carrot, apple or pear.

Gradually introduce grains like broken wheat (dalia), oats, semolina (sooji) or rice. Full-fat dairy products, such as pasteurised cheese and plain yoghurt, buttermilk and hardboiled eggs can also be given. Pulses and lentils are a great source of protein for the baby.

Avoid giving sugar and salt to the baby in the first one year after birth. Also avoid processed food, pre-packaged foods as far as possible, as these may lack the nutrition that the baby needs.
