Babies start teething during their first year of birth, some as early as 4 months of age.

Baby teeth sometimes emerge with no pain or discomfort at all. But they may also bring about a range of physical and emotional symptoms including-

  1. Their gum is sore and red where the tooth is coming through
  2. They have a mild temperature of less than 38 degree Celsius
  3. They have 1 flushed cheek or a rash on their face
  4. They drool more than usual
  5. They are gnawing and chewing on things a lot
  6. They are not sleeping well at night
  7. They are crankier or cry more than usual
  8. They lose their appetite or eat less than usual

Teething can be distressing for some babies. You may try a few things to soothe your baby.

  • Cool the teethers in the fridge before handing over to the baby. This will soothe your baby’s gums.
  • If your baby is 6 months or older, you can give them healthy things to chew on, such as raw fruit and vegetables. Soft fruit like melon can soothe gums.
  • Paracetamol can be given to relieve teething pain and fever in babies and young children aged 3 months or older.
  • Gently massaging their gums with a clean finger may also help.

Remember teething is a phase that passes away and most symptoms can be easily managed at home. However always speak to your doctor if your baby shows any extreme signs or before administering any medicines.
